blueberry muffins

a blueberry muffin kind of morning

I feel like the title of this post is misleading. It’s so tame. Blueberry muffins – everyone has them, right? Every bakery has tried blueberry muffins, they’re a staple at most baked good outlets. You can get them at your local supermarket in myriad forms and brands.

These muffins are not like those muffins.

pear chocolate almond scones

scone + coffee = breakfast of championsscones, scones, scones

I really love scones. They’re quick, they’re easy, they’re versatile and they’re absolutely delicious.

Stephanie Alexander’s sister once told her that when she heard the sound of a visitor at the gate, she should be able to get a batch of scones in the oven by the time they were at the front door. I’m fairly sure I’ve mentioned that before, but I love it so much, I’m saying it again. I don’t think I’m at that stage yet, but I can definitely make you scones for breakfast when I get back from my morning run.

chocolate + almonds = delicious

Scones take next to no effort, especially if you’re using a food processor. I don’t tend to these days, as I’m living at a house that doesn’t have a dishwasher. When you’re faced with three extra dishes or one to clean, always choose one.

raspberry coconut cupcakes

I feel like everyone is pregnant these days.

I’m not saying that this is a bad thing. I’m just saying that there seem to be a lot of little babies and baby bumps around the place. Facebook, Instagram, twitter – social media is going nuts with the baby photos and pregnancy updates.

Maybe it’s just that I had one friend who was pregnant, and then I started noticing every other pregnant person in my stratosphere. Maybe it’s that I’m at an age where all my friends are pregnant. (Not really. Sometimes I have to stop and remind myself that I’m only twenty-one, and that while this age is fine for some people to be getting married and having babies, it is far from the norm and also, I’m fine the way I am.) Or, maybe it’s that with the social media saturation the culture we live in, everything is everywhere and I am just noticing pregnant people and babies.  Continue reading

peach pie and ice cream

slice it up

close up

Last night I made a peach pie. It wasn’t the best-planned of baking adventures, leaving me stranded at midnight with hot pie; this is often how my endeavours turn out, badly plotted and with a less than impressive musical score. With this particular pie, the timer went off while I was in the shower. The shower. I ask you, who decides to have a shower with five minutes to go on the pie timer? Me, apparently.

light up my plate

(And before you get all high-and-mighty on my showering time, that gave me one minute to get ready, leaving me well within 4-minute-showering rules. I’m environmentally conscious. Yep.)

christmas biscotti

bowls and bowls

How exciting! We’re at the halfway point between the first day of December and Christmas Day and I’m excited. I can’t wait till Christmas but at the same time I’m really enjoying the excitement in the lead up. Included in that excitement was the Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap 2012.

I signed up for the swap after hearing about it via Best Friends for Frosting (I’m pretty sure) in November. The deal is, you bake a bunch of cookies. You send 1 dozen cookies to three food bloggers (that’s one dozen each) and in return, three food bloggers send you cookies! It was so much fun making up my packages and I love love love recieving mail so getting the cookies was awesome too!  Continue reading

roasted strawberry buttermilk cake

It’s summertime, y’all!

No, I’m not from the South (of the USA) but it is practically summer, although not technically so for a few weeks. (Like, say, two. Eek!)

But the sun is shining, the plants are growing, the sweat is flowing and the strawberries are coming out. Yes, I said sweat. I’m not going to lie, I’m a lady but I still have bodily functions. That kinda overreact when you go running in the sun. Especially if you go for 14 kilometres. Continue reading

breakfast

I went home this past weekend to visit my family and ooh and aah over my sister’s wedding photos. I don’t always get home as often as I’d like to, despite the fact that my family only live a 2 1/2 hour drive away. Our lives get busy, work doesn’t always co operate and sometimes, there just isn’t the time.

However, I did get to drive home after work on Saturday, listening to the Joy the Baker podcast and finally wearing a light, summery dress – the weather is warming up, people! Despite my penchant for winter and all the fun it brings, there’s something undeniably uplifting about a warm, sunny day, light sandals and country air.
